Are you the homeschool mom that spends endless hours searching for the right homeschool curriculum for your students? Well, you’re not alone. What exactly is the best homeschool curriculum to use in your homeschool? If you’re reading this post in the hopes that I’ll have all the answers for you, you may need to search a different blog. Homeschool Mama, I can’t tell you what the “perfect” one is. However, I can give you plenty of tips and hope for choosing one that works for you.
There Is No “Perfect” Choice
I’m going to say this again. There isn’t a “perfect” homeschool curriculum choice for your student. Homeschool curriculum is not a “one size fits all” either. One thing may work for one child while something else works for another. That’s the way it’s supposed to be!
Consider the frame of each of your children when you’re choosing a homeschool curriculum. When I was choosing mine, I choose to use a different subject from different companies. I also created my own and just made it work for me.
Your Homeschool Curriculum Should Serve You
Here is the best advice I can give homeschool mothers no matter how long you’ve been homeschooling. Are you ready? The curriculum you choose should serve you – no the other way around. That is right!! It is not your master. You are the master over the curriculum. It is your guide – not your law.
Let me briefly explain. If the lesson plans have something listed that you don’t feel you or your student can do at a certain point, don’t do it! That’s quite freeing. That’s why you’re homeschooling in the first place, right? Freedom. Take it and find freedom in that.
Test Drive Curriculum Before You Buy
There is nothing worse than buying an entire curriculum set and finding out it doesn’t work for your children. Instead, consider using a curriculum rental service before you spend hundreds of dollars on one. A curriculum rental service such as Yellow House Book Rental lets you rent curriculum for a certain time and then decide if you want to buy it. That’s fantastic!
Yellow House Book Rental is family owned and operated by a homeschooling family. You can even rent most of their products for 10 months. That’s pretty much an entire school year! Some of the curriculum options they offer include:
- Life of Fred
- Write Shop
- Exploring America
- And so much more…!
You can check out the other subjects and products they offer here.
Find Some Help and Encouragement
Homeschooling can be a lonely road if you don’t have a community to share it with you. It’s important to have camaraderie for the joys and the struggles of homeschooling. If you live in a place with fellow homeschoolers, I encourage you to schedule frequent times to get together and share life. If you’re not in a place where you have that, engage in online communities that provide encouragement to you.
Here are a few of my favorite online place to go for ideas, tips and encouragement:
- Michelle Osborne with Yellow House Book Rental
- Jamie Martin with Simple Homeschool
- Pam Barnhill with Homeschool Solutions
- Brandy Vencel with Afterthoughts
I have a wonderfully close group of homeschooling mamas that stretch and encourage me in this journey. We meet in person or video at least once a week. It’s so important for our spiritual and emotional growth.
Are you wrestling to find “the perfect” curriculum for your homeschool? What have you tried? If you have questions I’d love to help answer them!
